Five Fun Things To Do At Lake Louise!

Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada is absolutely one of the prettiest areas I have seen thus far in my travels. The turquoise blue waters are incredibly jaw dropping. The huge glaciers within the mountains are so gorgeous you’ll be staring at them for hours; some of the glaciers here at Lake Louise are over 200 feet tall!

During our 10 day travels around Canada, we found some amazing things. I want to share some of those things. This lake sits at just over 5,000 feet in elevation. In the summer, the lake is a gorgeous blue color, almost a turqiose, and in the winter it is frozen solid :). We traveled here in June of 2018 and the weather was awesome! It was warm enough to get outside in a short sleeve shirt, and a few days it was even a little hot. The evenings were much cooler though.

#1 Check out the lake!

It seriously is so vivid in its turquoise blue color. This lake is fed from the glaciers you see off into the distance. You will want to have your camera ready as the opportunities here for breathtaking shots are almost endless. I wanted to spend hours, I took lots and LOTS of photos lol!! While you’re here, sit on the waters edge and eat lunch. It makes for the perfect picnic spot! It’s not the best swimming location though. I went into the lake with my shoes off to get a picture and it didn’t last long, IT IS COLD!! My feet started burning lol!!

Don’t forget to use your zoom lens to get a close up view of those incredible glaciers! Now remember I said these glaciers are over 200 feet tall, so when you see those huge cracks on zoom, you can imagine just how huge they are! Keep an eye out for avalanches as well, as they are a regular occurrence. We didn’t catch one while we were at this spot, but we did see one at another spot. It was such an incredible booming sound. I will show you pictures in an upcoming post. I really enjoyed just sitting and being still as I watched and listened to everything around me. I could have stayed in this area for hours lol!

#2ย Check out the Gorgeous Fairmont Chateu Hotel

This hotel sits right in front of the lake. It really is beautiful and has 552 rooms! They also have several restaurants, shops, a spa, and fitness classes. If you plan to stay here, check their website and book early, as they tend to fill up fast. This is a picture of the hotel looking at it from the back of the lake.

We didn’t get the chance to stay here this time, but will definitely book early for our next trip. We did eat at one of the cafe’s though and it was very good! We walked around the shops and, let me just tell you, there are many shops to check out lol!! Here is another picture of it up closer. ๐Ÿ™‚

#3 Rent a canoe and paddle around on the beautiful lake.

We were so busy hiking we didnt get a chance to try this but there is always next time :). I’m sure taking the canoe out on that water would be incredible. Although, like I said, the water was COLD so you wouldn’t want to fall in LOL!

#4ย Go on one of the many hikes here!

Lake Louise Lakeshore trail is a 2km (1.2 miles) trail that is fairly paved and flat until the very end. It follows the lake all the way to the back where the milky creek enters the lake. If you haven’t hiked in this area before, there are lots of signs warning you to hike with others and also carry bear spray. You are in the great outdoors after all. ๐Ÿ™‚

The Plain of Six Glaciers Trail is also accessed from the lakeshore trail. If you continue on you will go past the lake and then start to climb. We stopped and decided not to go any further as we hadn’t bought our bear spray yet ๐Ÿ™‚ But if you continue on there is a tea house that is located about 4+ miles from the beginning of the trail. The trail itself is 13.8 kilometers (8.5 miles) round trip. The tea house serves lunch for hikers, and all supplies for this location are hiked or flown in by helicopter. I mean how cool is that to be hiking along and get hungry and have a tea house available? LOL This is on my list to see when I go back to Canada.

There are plenty of other hikes here. however I wasn’t able to check them all out this time but believe me I am going back and will check them out then ๐Ÿ™‚

#5 Ride the Gondola

This was on our list of must sees but we just weren’t able to squeeze it in. The gondola ride is 14 minutes long and takes you to an elevation of 6,850 feet. There are two choices either and open chair or fully enclosed gondola. While on the gondola you will travel over bear habitat and I am told that you get to see lots of grizzlies! I will come back and see this next time for sure!

Lovely to see it in Summer – we were there in Winter and still beautiful, but would love to see it unfrozen. We had afternoon tea at the Fairmont and someone was getting married by the lake! It was freezing and she had short sleeves!!
If we get there in Summer we will look at the Six Glaciers Trail ๐Ÿค— Thanks for you post !
